July 30, 2012 in Music by Marisa

Interview by: Marisa Young & Julia Gawle WRBB sat down with John Nolan (guitar and vocals) and Mark O’Connell (drums) of Taking Back Sunday at Warped Tour in Mansfield July 19th. Check out the interview below! WRBB: So you guys have been on the entire Warped Tour this year; you’ve also been on this tour in the past, correct? Mark: Yeah, well we just did it in 2004. We did the whole thing in 2004 and then the whole thing this year. Oh so it’s been a while. How are you liking it this year so far? John: Pretty fun, so far so good. Yeah. It’s a grueling tour. But, uh, it has been fun. The shows have been good. Have you had a favorite spot so far that you’ve played in? John: Chicago was really good. I mean just on this tour in particular, just that crowd stood out to me as being very good. Mark: New Jersey, we always do pretty well in New Jersey. John: And we’re about to get into the New York kind of, uh, territory, more so than we have been. And we’re anticipating big things, big things. And that’s hometown for you guys right? Mark: Yup hometown. John: Hometown. Hoping for big things there. Mark: Big things, big things coming our way. But we can’t get too excited there because then they let you down. John: Inevitably. When is that? Coming up this week? John: Uh like two days from now. Mark and John: Philly and then Long Island. So you’ve got what, two more shows to prepare? Mark: Well like one more, not counting today. John: (laughs) I don’t think we really need to prepare. We’re pretty prepared set wise, show wise, we got it down at this point. (laughing) I hope so! Do you have

Interview: A Loss For Words

July 27, 2012 in Music by Marisa

I had the opportunity to sit down with Matty Arsenault, the singer of Boston pop punk band A Loss For Words at Warped Tour July 19th. Check out the interview below! WRBB: You’ve been on the whole Warped Tour so far.  How’s it feel being in Boston (your hometown) right now? Matty: Yeah, my brain is totally scrambled. Now that I’m home it’s great. I would say that every day’s just a parking lot but at least this parking lot is filled with the love of my friends and family, which is way cooler than the regular parking lot at all the other shows. I’m sure. What’s been the best date you’ve played so far? Best day so far was definitely San Francisco; that was cool. But I know for a fact that today will be the best one. How was yesterday (7/18) in PA with the huge hurricane? (laughs) Yeah yesterday! Well we played first so it was actually a really good day for playing first since we kind of got to skip that whole storm thing. We kind of just sat on the bus afterwards. You guys just released an album last year— Yeah we actually had two records in the last year: No Sanctuary was the full length with the full band and then we also just did an acoustic EP called Returning to Webster Lake, so we have those two new records out this year. Awesome, how has your fan base been reacting to those albums? Good, good. I mean it’s funny to see the difference between the new fans and old fans: the kids only singing the new songs and some that sing both, so it’s cool to see the new record is definitely catching on. The music video that we just released for “Raining

Warped Tour Recap – Mansfield, MA

July 24, 2012 in Featured, Shows by Marisa

Written by: Marisa Young Photos by: Julia Gawle Last Thursday, July 19th The Vans Warped Tour came crashing through Massachusetts at the Comcast Center in Mansfield. The tour was more than half way through its course with 26 dates already under its belts and only 14 more remaining. As usual, the day brought over 100 bands playing on over 8 different stages, and drew hundreds of teenaged attendees. Unlike the past few years Warped Tour has come through MA, the weather couldn’t have been better with zero rain and a nice breeze to keep the masses cool (although several sunburns were spotted as the day carried on). The first bands began playing around 11:45am after the majority of the crowd hustled in through the opening gates. At this point, many people were anxiously running around the parking lot and amphitheater trying to grasp their bearings as well as determining which stage was where and what bands were playing at which times. This year, the tour brought several Boston based bands along with it, including Four Year Strong, A Loss For Words, Vanna, and Transit to name a few. It was no surprise the crowd was thrilled to catch the sets of their locals, as large crowds and overly energetic fans appeared for each of these bands. It was evident the native bands were thrilled to play for their hometown fans as well. Top: A Loss For Words; Bottom: Shawn Marquis, Vanna Every year the Ernie Ball Stage is awesome to watch, featuring local battle of the band winners to perform on the stage throughout the day. This stage is a great place for upcoming local bands to showcase their talent and draw the attention of concert go-ers who haven’t yet heard their music. Post-hardcore band Actor|Observer were among the first

Track By Track Album Review: The Receiving End Of Sirens

July 9, 2012 in Music by Marisa

Written by: Marisa Young Concept albums always provide for an intriguing journey to not only the songwriter, but to the listener as well.  Even better concept albums incorporate strong musical aspects to fit the story, down to every last detail.  This is exactly what Boston locals The Receiving End of Sirens were able to accomplish with their first full-length album Between The Heart And The Synapse. In 2005, The Receiving End of Sirens, TREOS for short, were newcomers of the music world.  It was no surprise that Between The Heart And The Synapseoverwhelmingly surmounted any listener’s expectations, as most were expecting to hear a modest attempt of an initial album by assumingly inexperienced musicians.  Instead, the listener is greeted with a plethora of sounds created through multiple instruments including three guitarists, three singers, and a limitless amount of electronics and effects.  Lyrically, Between The Heart And The Synapse surges through poetically written verses regarding betrayal, philosophy, conspiracies, anatomy, and death, ultimately creating memorable phrases and themes to unite the album.  Through the use of flawless transitions that make the album flow as one, TREOS guides the listener through 70 minutes and 13 tracks of pure brilliance. The album kicks off with a less than a minute prologue, filled with airy electronics and teetering guitars before seamlessly jumping into the first full length track, and first single, of the album.  “Planning A Prison Break” greets the listener with a ridiculously catchy chorus, heavy guitar rhythms, and perfectly smooth harmonies.  The contrasting sections featuring soft intricate melodies against the thicker, in your face chord progressions foreshadow the manipulated elements the band plays with throughout the rest of the album. The ending of track two introduces the first of several repeated lines used throughout the album, one being “This is the last night in my body”. Track
