Mayhem Fest Recap

August 14, 2012 in Featured, Shows by Marisa

Written by: Marisa Young Photos by: Corey Tilton  The Comcast Center in Mansfield has been home to several different types of music festivals this summer, one of them being metal-filled Rockstar’s Mayhem Fest.  Created by Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman, it’s no wonder the similarities between Mayhem and Warped exist.  The main differences lie in the size—Mayhem occupying much less space— and the genres involved; Where Warped Tour focuses on varieties of alternative rock ranging from electronica and poppy rock to metalcore, Mayhem focuses in on strictly metal acts.  This year, headliners of Mayhem Fest included Slipknot, Slayer, Motörhead, and Anthrax.  Other notable acts included The Devil Wears Prada, As I Lay Dying, and Whitechapel. Joey Belladonna of Anthrax Phil Bozeman of Whitechapel On August 3rd in Mansfield, doors to Mayhem Fest opened around 1pm. Fans were allowed to wander throughout the sectioned off parking lot and picnic area where a side stage and local stage were set up.  The amphitheater didn’t open until roughly 5pm when the headliner acts were to take the stage. Metalcore acts The Devil Wears Prada (TDWP) and As I Lay Dying (AILD) performed on the side stage back-to-back, keeping the teenaged crowd satisfied. TDWP opened with “Born To Lose”, their first single off their latest album Dead Throne.  Despite the lack of enthusiasm displayed by the crowd, due to either the oppressive heat or saving their energy for later acts, TDWP plowed through oldies “Danger: Wildman” as well as tracks off their 2010 Zombie EP.  As I Lay Dying took the stage directly after, blasting the crowd with one of their heaviest tunes “Condemned” right off the bat.  The rest of AILD’s set was filled with fan favorites such as “Nothing Left” and “Confined”. Interview: As I Lay Dying

August 14, 2012 in Music by Marisa

Interview by: Marisa Young Photos by: Corey Tilton WRBB caught up with Josh Gilbert, bassist / vocalist of San Diego metal band As I Lay Dying at Mayhem Fest August 3rd.  Check out the interview below! Josh Gilbert You guys have been on Mayhem Fest for a while now and you only have a couple days left— Yeah it’s been almost a month, actually over a month now… What’s been the best date you’ve played so far? Well I was separating it into two best days: for the side stage the best date was Albuquerque because there was a crazy storm. The rain and wind were crazy and it tore up the stage and tore up a lot of the merch tents; we thought they were going to cancel the show.  But we were the first band to play after the storm was kind of finished, and by then people were just so amped up that the show didn’t get cancelled so the crowd just went nuts. And then on the main stage the best one was probably Chicago because, you know a lot of the time the way the amphitheaters are, I haven’t seen this one yet, but there’s…a really small pit area and a TON of seats and then there’s a lawn area. Usually we don’t get much going on in the very front because it’s people who paid more money, like the older people who came to see the bands they wanted to get real close to, and they had to pay $120 bucks for their tickets. So they’re not going to be like moshing the way our normal crowd would be. But the lawn, we always address the lawn while we’re on the stage and this specific show we do a song where we do a

August 2, 2012 in Music by Marisa

Interview by: Marisa Young Live photos by: Julia Gawle Boston post-hardcore band Actor|Observer discuss playing on Warped Tour, music, friends, and burritos in the exclusive interview below! Actor|Observer is: Greg Marquis – Vocals/Guitar Alex Paul – Guitar/Vocals Brett Colangelo – Bass Dan Bob Goterch – Drums WRBB—Marisa: So this is your first Warped Tour— Brett: Yes! Well, first one I’m playing…I’ve been before many times. Right, the first time that Actor|Observer has played Warped Tour Brett: Yes, yes it is! How’d it feel?! Brett: Uhm…it felt really…cool. There were a lot of friends and fans that we’ve known who have become almost like family, that’ll come up to us and be like “hey!” and give us a big hug. We do our best to remember everyone’s names and stuff like that because you know, it feels nice- I mean it felt nice when I was a kid when like Therefore I Am knew your name and it felt real good so we try and make an effort.  But yeah, Brian Marquis who used to be in Therefore I Am came and did guest vocals with us, which he’s only done once before because he lives in California, so it was really fun. But other than that it felt like a regular show! I noticed you guys had a pretty solid fan base in this crowd! I can see it building over time and it makes me excited for you. Brett: Yeah it’s really exciting. I was walking with my friend to go see Vanna, stopped for a second before going in, and this random dude who was like a dad walked up and shook my hand and said that he liked my band.  And that was really great because I wasn’t expecting that and it’s been happening all day. That’s
