Lit or Nah?: “UGH!” by The 1975

The 1975 - UGH!

After the release of their slightly underwhelming first single, Love Me, off their oddly titled album I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It, the drop of their second single, UGH!, is instilling confidence in the fans of British band The 1975 once again.

Lit or Nah?: “UGH!” by The 1975

UGH! delivers intrigue both lyrically and musically. Right off the bat we are introduced to the repetitive funk infused bass line that dances throughout the remainder of the song. To keep the track from becoming overtly lackluster, they sprinkle it with synth melodies that lends itself to an addictive tune reminiscent of the 70s with a modern edge. Under the smoke screen of the catchy upbeat tempo of UGH!, The 1975 stays true to its MO of a more sinister tone. The band’s frontman, Matthew Healy, sings with passion of his odyssey of a relationship with cocaine. With lyrics such as “When I said I liked it better without my money, I lied” and “I’m not giving it up again”, Healy is recognizing his addiction and declaring he has no plans on the horizon to try and quit. UGH!, is a refreshingly unique sound worth giving a listen to.

Verdict: Lit!
